JUDITH KINDLER / THE COLLECTIONS

It’s like peeling an onion. Work that, at first glance, appears serene, lovely, ethereal, humorous then, for the patient viewer, begins to reveal what lies beneath. And sometimes, what lies there are more questions. But, for every viewer, my work is never one thing, never singular, never simple. Each piece is built layer upon layer, and it is revealed layer by layer, both in narrative and process.

This explains why most of my work is a melding of media both diverse and complex. Photography, sculpture, painting, encaustics, polymers and resins, and found objects are joined to express what cannot otherwise be expressed; that which cannot be put into words in individual works or large installations. The collections often are responses to highly personal current or past events. Through this lens of intimacy, I try to interpret our greater social impact — shared dreams, frustrations, hopes, despairs. Through the work, I find that my unconscious thoughts cross into the conscious. Is it my story I’m telling? Or is it yours? I am exposing, and I am exposed. The theme for each collection opens a door to a body of work that consumes me for the next 1 to 3 years. I explore both the psychological and physical reactions to life experiences. The figures I employ (often as white as chalk and devoid of detail) are a transparent expression, idea or emotion. They are each of us.
