Pratt Fine Arts Center has partnered with the Seattle Design Center to undertake a project pairing the creativity of artists and designers to create unique, unexpected versions of the everyday household item: the chair. Each team starts with the bones of a chair provided by Chicago furniture maker Baker, which they will alter to express their collaborative vision.
The ten artist/designer teams will come together February 17, 2011, to reveal their creations at Seattle Design Center’s Northwest Design Awards Gala. After the gala, the chairs will be displayed at Nordstrom in downtown Seattle and other venues throughout the city until they are auctioned off in August 2011, with proceeds benefitting Pratt.
“The intention of the Chair Project was to build a partnership between the art and design worlds to see where their combined talents could lead us,” said Brandi Clark, Director of Community Initiatives at Pratt Fine Arts Center. “We partnered ten artists with ten award winning designers, gave them a Baker chair and stepped back. No one wanted to limit the imaginations or ideas of the teams, so they have been given no restrictions; the final chair may be a still be a functional chair, an abstract work or art, a vehicle for an idea or something else entirely. We are all very excited to see how the members of these teams influenced each other and worked together and what their final results will be.”
Since 1976, Pratt Fine Arts Center has offered art classes for everyone and workspace for artists in its equipment-rich facilities in Seattle's Central District. Pratt serves 3,400 students each year and more than 500 working artists use Pratt's affordable studios and equipment.

"The Dreams" - Part I. Two and Three dimensional mixed media works. Kindler tackles the subject of dreams in this exhibition. While the subjects are not all the result of sleeping dreams, they characterize a dreamlike state that exists when one is creating. The illusive quality of the subject and the dramatic lights and darks typical in a dream state is expressed utilizing the artists photography captured over the last year and incorporated into work with encaustics and oils. There is a large sculptural installation, primarily made of resin and metal, entitled "Recurring Dreams" that is the central focus in the exhibition.

Cornish College of the Arts was pleased to present The Journal, an exhibit of recent works in sculpture and two dimensional mixed media by Judith Kindler. The Journal was on view from May 10 through June 10, 2005.
Inspired by her journals from the past 30 years, Kindler documents questions she has asked of the I Ching (Book of Changes). The use of the I Ching accesses an ancient Chinese tradition, using a philosophical understanding of one’s position in relationship to a question posed. Revealing the trials and reflections of daily life, her work considers journal keeping as an ongoing dialogue with oneself. Through visual exploration, the artist exposes the commonality of the human experience, our search for answers and insight as well as our blindness to personal failings.
Judith Kindler donated half of the proceeds from sales of works in this show to the Cornish Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to the next generation of artists.
